Sensex gains ground from lower level


The Sensex seemed to be exhibiting a moderate degree of volatility in the
absence of any major positive trigger, as well as lacking direction. It
opened with a positive gap of 39 points at 7651. And immediately went on to
hit a high of 7658.43 level. The low is at 7595.84 level.
At 12:12 IST, the BSE Sensex is trading 28 points higher at 7641 level.
Total turnover amounted to Rs 1,131 crore.
The advance-decline ratio further strengthened, and is currently close to
4:1. About 1,967 shares advanced and 463 shares declined so far. About 50
shares remained unchanged.
Among Sensex stocks, 18 were trading higher and 12 were in the negative.
Bajaj Auto (up 2.6% to Rs 1380), was the biggest gainer on volumes of 4,939
shares.
HDFC Bank (down 1.7% to Rs 640) was the biggest loser. 17,233 shares were
traded on the counter by now.
Aftek Infosys notched up the highest turnover, of Rs 66.93 crore, followed
by Reliance Industries (Rs 42.72 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 33.94
crore).
Among side counters, Suryalakshmi Cotton, Modison Metal, Apollo Sindhoori,
Katwa Udyog, Indokem, and Supriya Pharma surged 20% each.
Lahoti Overseas (down 9.69%), Vajra Granites (down 9.56%) and Shalibhadra
Finance (down 8.85%) figured as losers.
MphasiS BFL was trading lower by 4.38% to Rs 240.2 on volumes of 1.05 lakh
shares after Barings India Investments called off its 35.6% stake sale in
the company.
AstraZeneca Pharma was trading firm, up by 3.66% to Rs 2116, on volumes of
931 shares after the company reported a net profit of Rs 13.8 crore (Rs 10.5
crore) on net sales of Rs 61.4 crore (Rs 53.3 crore) for Q2 ended 30 June
2005.
Hindustan Sanitaryware moved higher by 2.26% to Rs 172 on volumes of 6,502
shares after it reported a net profit of Rs 6.98 crore (Rs 4.11 crore) on
net sales of Rs 93.7 crore (Rs 66.9 crore) for Q1 ended 30 June 2005.
Larsen and Toubro was trading higher by 1% to Rs 1,293, on volumes of 6,169
shares after it bagged a Rs 211-crore order to re-build Kensington Oval in
Barbados.
